How EOS Changed the Way People Use Lip Balm

There was a standard set in the lip balm industry. Everything was Chapstick and Blistex, or made to look like Chapstick. It came in cylindrical tubes and sometimes it even had flavors like cherry or mint. They fit nicely in a pocket and they got the job done. Your alternatives were lip gloss, or lipstick, which served more of a cosmetic purpose than anything else.

Then along came a company called Evolution of Smooth (EOS for short) with a revolutionary new approach to lip balm. It took off like wildfire!

You may have seen EOS lip balm products in fashion magazines, in Facebook ads, or even being carried around by a friend. Their signature lip balm comes in little colored balls with screw-on lids.

They come in a variety of stylish colors that also coincide with their unique flavors. Consumers could choose from grapefruit and honeydew.

EOS lip balms first showed up in Walgreens, then made their way to Walmart eBay and Target. They were affordable, trendy, and a must-have item for females of all ages.

EOS had built a $250 million company and became the second best-selling lip balm in the United States. They soared past companies that had been around far longer. So what makes them so special?

It’s partly because they changed the way people use lip balm. It’s still functional but they also made it fashionable.  It was fun. It was different at a time when the market demanded something different and it really worked out for the company.
