The famous mathematician, Michael Lacey

Michael Thoreau Lacey was born on 26th September 1959. Lacey was awarded a PhD from The University of Illinois in 1987, under Walter Philipp’s direction. He is a famous American mathematician whose thesis was mainly in the area of probability and is very good at solving problems that are related to the iterated logarithm law for various empirical characteristic functions.

Michael Lacey’s work mainly touches on areas of ergodic theory, probability and harmonic analysis. Egordic theory studies the dynamic systems with related problems and invariant measures.

The University of North Carolina and Louisiana State University were the first places that Michael got his postdoctoral positions. Walter Philipp and Lacey provided proof of the central limit theorem while at the University of North Carolina. In the year 1989, Lacey worked at the Indian University where he was able to receive a postdoctoral fellowship with the National Science Foundation.

The National Science Foundation supports fundamental education and research in all non-medical fields of engineering and science. While Lacey was at the Indian University, he began the study of bilinear Hilbert transformation.

In 1996, Lacey and Christoph Thiele were awarded the Salem Prize because they were able to solve a conjecture that was brought forward by Alberto Calderon. The Salem Prize is an award given annually to mathematicians who are considered to have done outstanding work in the theory of Fourier series.

Michael Thoreau remains a renown professor of mathematics since 1996 at the renown Georgina Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. Lacey was able to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 together with Xiaochum Li.

Guggenheim Fellowships are those grants that are awarded annually to those people who have managed to demonstrate exceptional creative skills and ability in the arts and productive scholarship.

Michael later became a member of the American Mathematical Society in the year 2012 which was an association that was made up of different professional mathematicians who dedicated their time to mathematical scholarships and research.

It also serves the international and national community through meetings, its publications, other programs and advocacy. Michael Lacey is still and will always remain a famous Mathematician for his works and contributions towards mathematics.
